78 years ago today, a young Jewish girl named Annelies “Anne” Frank was gifted a diary for her 13th birthday. Anne was part of a Jewish family, who lived in Germany during the early 1930’s. She and her older sister Margot were the daughters of a German businessman named Otto and their mother Edith.

After Adolf Hitler took power of Germany, the rise of antisemitism forced the Frank family to abandon their home and move to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. But in 1940, Germany invaded the Netherlands, claiming it as their own and subjugating the population to the same anti-semitic rhetoric the Franks had fled before.

Facing the possibility that their family would be forced into labor camps or worse, the Franks went into hiding in the summer of 1942. Their refuge was a three story building above the Opekta offices, located on the Prinsengracht. For several years, the Franks lived there in secret with the aid of friends and office workers who helped them keep a low profile.

While in concealment, Anne detailed her experiences in the diary she had been gifted, including day to day struggles, interactions with her family, and her dreams and aspirations for the future.

On August 4th, 1944, the Frank family was discovered by the German police. They were immediately considered criminals by the Nazi government and sent to Westerbork Transit Camp to do hard labor. In September that same year, the Franks were transported to Auschwitz concentration camp, where Otto was separated from the women. Sadly, Edith, Margot and Anne all perished at Auschwitz.

Otto survived, and after the war he was given Anne’s diary by Miep Gies, one of the office workers who had helped hide his family. Miep had hidden the diary in the hopes of returning it to Anne after she returned home. To Otto’s great surprise, he discovered the detailed notes, photos and diary entries left behind by his daughter. In 1947, Anne’s diary was officially published in the Netherlands under the title “Het Achterhuis” (The Annex) and in 1952, was published in the United States under the title Anne Frank: The Diary Of A Young Girl.

The events of the Holocaust were horrific and completely unjust. Millions of people, including Anne, were senselessly murdered in a genocide aimed at silencing an entire nation of people. Yet to this day, Anne’s words live on, ringing loud and clear the hopeful wonderment and courage of the human spirit.
