Editor’s note: Former Syracuse University player Demetris Nichols is playing for Boeheim’s Army in this year’s The Basketball Tournament. The coronavirus pandemic has forced the TBT to adjust its schedule and its field. The abbreviated 24-team event is being held in Columbus, Ohio. Players must pass multiple tests for Covid-19 and they are quarantined in one hotel.
Nichols will submit a daily diary to offer fans a window into a most unusual TBT.
We were all excited after our win over Men of Mackey on Tuesday. After the game, we went into the man-made locker room. It was basically a bunch of chairs surrounded by curtains, but we were excited.
The guys were happy that we were able to get a win in our first game even when we didn’t play as well as we wanted to. We didn’t shoot that well from 3-point range, 4-for-21, but we went to the line and made 28 out of 32, which is outstanding.
We left the arena and went back to the hotel and went to the players’ lounge and had something to eat. We knew who we were going to play in our next game; the Sideline Cancer team, so we talked about them for just a little bit.
Wednesday was a day of rest. We practiced from 5 to 7 p.m., but it was mostly shooting. We did some competitive shooting to keep that edge, while still allowing our bodies to get some rest.
I was sore. It was my first time playing in over 15 months because of my surgery. I felt a step slow, but I tried to make sure I was in the right place, especially on defense. I played my role. I feel like we’re one big puzzle and everybody’s got to be their piece of the puzzle.
We did go over our plays some more because there were some plays that we had messed up on during the game.
Toward the end of practice we watched the last four minutes of the Carmen’s Crew game against House of ‘Paign. Carmen’s Crew were the defending champions. They were the No. 1 seed and they were the hometown team. Their guys played at Ohio State and some lived in Columbus. It was shocking to see them lose.
Now, we have two more days before Saturday’s game. I’m excited for another opportunity compete for a million dollars.
