"Marriage Story” is not your typical romance movie, instead it captures the roller coaster of emotions between two people getting a divorce.
The film, directed by Noah Baumbach, follows the story of Nicole (played by Scarlett Johannson) and Charlie (Adam Driver) as they navigate through a difficult divorce while trying to keep things amicable for the sake of their son Henry (Azhy Robertson).
“Marriage Story” is full of emotion. It shows the good, the bad and the ugly of divorce.
Accompanied by incredible scenery and music, this film is able to capture the sad reality of divorce while still showcasing the beauty of the new beginnings that are to come for Nicole and Charlie as individuals.
Johannson and Driver portray their roles in such a way that it is sometimes difficult to tell they are acting. They are somehow able to transport the viewers into their world – as if the viewer can step into the character’s mind and feel all of their hurt and pain. It is something that can be very difficult to achieve but when it is done correctly, the result is truly beautiful.
Robertson also has incredible talent for his young age. With child actors, it is often noticeable that they are reading lines. However, Robertson’s acting shows us the impact divorce can have on a young child while still being a kid.
Baumbach showcases the amount of love between Nicole and Charlie but also the resentment. Nicole and Charlie go from attempting to peacefully settle the divorce without lawyers, to eventually bringing in two of the most ruthless divorce lawyers they could ever find and dragging each other through turmoil simply because both parties want to win. Later in the movie, Nicole and Charlie break out into a screaming match where all of their dirty laundry is aired out, but unexpectedly come to an understanding.
In the end, they both compromise for the sake of their son and do what is best for him. This showcases the one thing they will always have in common – their love for Henry.
“Marriage Story” is a film that will be remembered and revered for years to come.
Even though it was sometimes difficult to tell how much time had passed between the scenes, when Nicole and Charlie were fighting in one scene and respectfully co-parenting in the next, the audience saw all the resentment that had built within their marriage.
It was a way to help the audience understand every side of a similar situation and recognize that while this story of divorce is extremely sad and difficult, it is also the story of two people that love and respect each other enough to know that their journey together has come to an end. It was a bittersweet and beautiful film that I highly recommend everyone should see.
