The members of moe. are no strangers to Albany, N.Y.’s Palace Theatre. The Buffalo-bred quintet have played there many times since making their debut at the onetime movie house in 1996—as part of a fully segued “Rock The Vote” show that also featured their old-school running buddies Ominous Seapods, Yolk and Moon Boot Love. In fact, they’ve appeared at the historic Palace more than any other rock band, including three New Year’s Eve shows and a gig where the mayor of Albany declared Feb. 24 to be “moe. day.”
So it wasn’t surprising that the group chose the theater to perform their new five-song release, Not Normal, in its entirety along with a two-set show that was later livestreamed as Play for the Palace. However, instead of loading onto the venue’s grand stage, the members of moe. set up in the lobby for their crowdless concert. The unique event—which was filmed during the rehearsals for the band’s recent drive-in tour—included the first live version of a new Rob Derhak original, “Pill Vacation,” the second track on their latest release. Here, the group’s five members reflect on the opportunity to be tourists in their own town for a day.
This was such a special setting, as we rarely get to see the foyer of the Palace, though I saw many of my favorite shows here in the ‘80s, including Frank Zappa in 1988. Fun fact: The Palace Theatre is designed in the Austrian Baroque style and was originally owned by RKO in the 1930s. Contrary to urban myth, Vinnie does not live there. AL SCHNIER
This is probably the fanciest rehearsal space we have ever used—there’s a bit of eye candy to go along with the vibe. I also had an ATM at arm’s length in case cash was an immediate necessity. It was really good to play with the band again—shake off the rust and dust. The lobby was a major curveball after being so used to the stage—a whole new perspective of the mighty Palace. CHUCK GARVEY
Albany and the Palace have always been like second homes to the band. It’s a very relaxed, welcoming environment, and I think that comes through in our playing. I’ll always remember the show we played at the Palace where the mayor declared Feb. 24 “moe. day.” What a great honor! ROB DERHAK
The Palace Theatre is one of my favorite places to play. It is a hometown show for me, and moe. has had many special nights there. I’ve also had many great times in the lobby of the Palace as a spectator, and now I can say that I’ve even performed there. VINNIE AMICO
Honestly, I’m not sure I’ve ever been in the lobby of the Palace Theatre. We’ve played there so many times, but I always use the stage door. It was a lot of fun playing in the lobby and knowing that we are doing what we can to help out the Palace made it that much better. But it was great to be back playing with the guys again. Rehearsing for the upcoming shows and streams was just a great and necessary thing to do. I felt like myself again. JIM LOUGHLIN
