The Maw may be The Medium's main antagonist, but it isn't the real monster here. Sure, this creature is your typical textbook demon, but very much like in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the monster isn't always the creature, but sometimes it could be its creator.
The deeper you get into The Medium's storyline and the more you explore Niwa's corridors, the more you realize that Richard -Thomas' father figure and Lilianne's "uncle"- is the one who made possible The Maw's existence. If you're curious about who this person was and how he was connected to Lilianne's father, then you should go ahead and find all of Richard's diary pages.
There are seven in total, all scattered throughout The Niwa Resort spaces. Here's where you can find them.
Richard's Diary Page #1 - An Apology
At the beginning of the game, you'll be looking for Thomas' whereabouts; he is a stranger who offered Marianne an explanation about who she is and the nature of her powers. While looking for him, you'll inevitably end up in a room at The Niwa Resort that has a big hole on the ground, jump down it, and you'll be in the same room where the first Memory Shard is.
However, you're not looking for those at the moment. So, go to the right towards the hallway.
Once there, walk towards the camera, and you'll end up in a bathroom, look in the sink where you'll see a sheet of paper. That's the page you're looking for.
What is the page about?
On this page, Richard apologizes to Ursula for not loving her back and not being able to tell her that in person. Ursula was a nurse at The Niwa Resort who had a crush on Richard and was the one who cared for him when he ended up in a vegetative state.
Richard's Diary Page #2 - Throwing Away Greatness
After gaining access to the Dayroom, walk to the left until you see a bookshelf and boxes.
Move closer to them, and you'll see a sketch of some horses and the second diary page right next to it.
What is the page about?
This page is all about how Richard felt towards Thomas leaving behind his potential as a painter in favor of pursuing a career as an architect. On this page, Richard also expresses some animosity towards Thomas' new partner.
Richard's Diary Page #3 - A Very Special Boy
In that same Daycare area, follow the wall to your right until you'll see a couch.
Sitting on top of it will be another diary page.
What is the page about?
Here Richard writes about the first time he met Thomas (when the latter was still a boy) and how he could tell that the young man was really special due to the things he had seen.
Richard's Diary Page #4 - A Well Of Inspiration
Keep exploring the Daycare room until you see a green wall with painted flowers on it; there they'll be a lot of chairs on top of each other.
Get closer, and you'll see the fourth diary page lying on one of them.
What is the page about?
On this page, Richard talks about how he used Thomas' ability to see into the spirit world to fuel his own creativity and use that inspiration in his paintings.
Richard's Diary Page #5 - A Method To Madness
While in the Dayroom, head towards the center (where the table with flowers on it is) and then head towards the room where the globe is.
Once inside, you'll find the fifth diary page lying on top of the desk with the chair.
What is the page about?
On this page, Richard explains how his painting sessions with Thomas were, how the latter would sit and explain in great detail everything he saw in the spirit world while Richard sketched everything Thomas was saying.
Richard's Diary Page #6 - Growing Apart
You'll gain entrance to the teacher's office by finding the key inside the piano room. Once that's done, unlock the office's door and head inside.
Then head towards the end of the room where you'll see a big poster and a desk on top of that you'll see some papers lying around, the one that you can interact with is the sixth diary page.
What is the page about?
Here Richard explains what (or rather who) drove him and Thomas apart: Thomas' wife and Lilianne's and Marianne's mother. Albeit his jealousy, Richard eventually comes around and warms up to the woman; after all, Thomas was the closest thing he had to a son.
Richard's Diary Page #7 - A New Home
Leave the Dayroom and head downstairs. Once there, walk towards the painting and the canvases, and then head to the right to an area with many chairs in it.
There you'll see a table with a sheet of paper on it, that's the final diary page.
What is the page about?
On this page, Richard talks about the circumstances that led to him coming to The Niwa Resort and how Thomas was the one who offered a home in that place.
Why Should I Collect All Of Richard's Diary Pages?
Richard's diary pages - or Mentor's Diaries which is the name the game gives to them- are another of The Mediums collectibles, alongside Memory Shards, Echoes, Troubled Man's Notes, and Groundskeeper's Postcards. That's why collecting them will unlock some achievements you can show off, two to be precise:
You'll unlock the "Guiding Light" achievement the moment you find the first page from Richard's diary. Moreover, you'll unlock the "Devouring Darkness" achievement once you find all of the pages.
- Keep in mind that to unlock the "Devouring Darkness" achievement, you'll have to find all the pages in the same playthrough.
