Pokemon Go Kicks Of Developer Diary Series With Deep Dive Into Community Days - TheGamer

Niantic's stance on Pokemon Go's pandemic related feature caused quite a backlash from the community. In a bid to be more transparent with fans of the game, the developer has started a series of developer diaries, with the first one focussing on Community Days.

Hosted by Michael Steranka, Niantic's Director of product marketing, the seven-minute long video explained what goes into arguably the game's biggest recurring event and some things to come in the future.

To start off, Steranka spoke about how the idea of Community Day came about. "Back in 2017, we started hosting major in-person events for Pokemon Go," he explained. "But we quickly realised that it wasn't logistically to have a Go Fest or a Safari Zone in every city around the world. We instead decided to try and flip that model. Why not create a hyper focussed experience in Pokemon Go which communities all around the world could rally behind and host their own live events and meetups for?"

He also explained the developer's logic behind not having Community Day last the full 24 hours. A focussed window would increase the likelihood of players and community members coming together, which is one of the game's core pillars.

There have also been some complaints about the Pokemon chosen for the Community Day event. Steranka explained this saying that the developer's vision for Pokemon Go is for it to be a "forever game". Keeping that in mind, while it's easy to pick a 'mon for one Community Day, the team has to plan multiple, over a long period of time. It's not about letting players catch popular Pokemon, but a chance to celebrate each one of them.

Steranka later revealed some facts about Community Day, players walking an average of 4 Kms during each event for example. 30.7 billion featured 'mons have been captured till date, and the Community Day held on August 15, featuring Evee, saw the most player participation.

He also dropped some hints for the featured 'mon for November. It was originally discovered in the Sinnoh region and is an Electric type. Can you guess what it is?
