Uncertainty has been one of the most difficult things about this school year for fourth-grade teacher Annelise Holcomb. Not knowing from day-to-day if she’ll be teaching at school, or if her entire class will need to quarantine at home because of an exposure to coronavirus.
Holcomb is one of four Michigan teachers who recorded video diaries for MLive during the first month of this school year.
Just before Christmas break, we checked back in with two of them.
Holcomb teaches fourth grade at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School in Saginaw. Students are still attending class in person, though they wear masks and stay socially distant.
In her video diary update, Holcomb says cleaning and keeping the kids apart is a lot of work, but it’s worth it to be in the building: “I tell my kids, yes I know some of the things we are doing are not fun, but we want to be in school so that’s why we’re doing them.”
Philip Schwedler, an eight-grade social studies teacher in Freeland, has been teaching remotely since November 30. He says he thinks his students are still learning, though it’s not as good as being face-to-face.
Holcomb and Schwedler are both hopeful looking toward the new year, with the coronavirus vaccine now a reality.
Schwedler says, more than anything else, he’s looking forward to a return to normalcy: “Being able to connect with the students. Because that’s why we went into teaching in the first place.”
