It comes from Janice Schmidt, Petersburg, N.D. It concerns the family of Sharlene Nelson.
A while ago, Sharlene’s daughter Jenn and her daughter (Sharlene’s granddaughter) Emily, of West Fargo, were taking a bike ride early one morning.
Emily was wearing a helmet. Because of that, a West Fargo policewoman stopped them and gave Emily a coupon for a free Dairy Queen sundae.
Then Jenn recognized the cop was Brittany, the daughter of Virgil and Amy Schmidt, of Grand Forks.
Brittany was at the end of her work shift, so she and Jenn had time to visit. They discovered that Jenn’s mother Sharlene and Brittany’s father Virgil were first cousins. Sharlene is the daughter of Lois and Curtis Ellenson; Virgil is the son of Lloyd and Dinnie Schmidt; and Lois and Lloyd are siblings. Their parents were Erwin and Gertrude Schmidt.
Lois and Curtis farmed near Gardner, N.D. They are deceased.
Lloyd’s wife, Dinnie, died in 1994. Lloyd remarried and now lives in rural Oslo, Minn.
Janice, who sent this in, is a sister of Lois and Lloyd, the ninth of 10 children. She and her siblings grew up southwest of Niagara, N.D., and went to school in nearby Petersburg.
Janice worked for the Engesather family in Petersburg’s bank for more than 30 years.
She ends her note to “Neighbors” by saying that “Life is so good on the prairies of North Dakota. So many wonderful things are done daily by our law enforcement and military people. We thank them and our governing bodies for giving us so many freedoms we so enjoy and so often take for granted.
“We also thank and praise God for all the blessings bestowed on us. His being with us in both the glad times and the sad times sustains us in our time here as we show love, respect and dignity to him and to others,” Janice concludes.
