Brian Scalabrine was no Kobe Bryant. But the Boston Celtics fan favorite and the late Los Angeles Lakers legend will always have the Mamba connection.
Bryant became known as the "Black Mamba" due to his killer instinct and legendary ferocity on the court. Scalabrine? He's the "White Mamba," which the former Celtics backup once described as "the world's most dormant snake."
But Scalabrine was active enough in the early days of social media to get on Bryant's radar. On the one-year anniversary of Bryant's tragic death, Scalabrine joined NBC Sports' "Sports Uncovered" podcast to share his favorite story about Bryant that highlighted Kobe's star power.

"When I first got on social media, Kobe came out with a tweet that said, ‘The anti-social is now social, the Black Mamba is on Twitter,’ " Scalabrine recalled. "So I waited a week and basically said like, ‘White Mamba waited longer than Black Mamba, White Mamba is now on Twitter.’
"I started the day out fine, you know 5,000 for the day, nothing crazy. All of a sudden, Kobe responds and says, ‘Congratulations White Mamba, welcome to Twitter’, and all of the sudden, it went from five to 10 to 20 to 30 to 40 to 50 to 60,000. So by the end of the day, I had 60,000 followers, all because Kobe reached out and said congratulations White Mamba for joining Twitter. So that is my social media interaction with the Black Mamba."
Scalabrine recently passed 100,000 followers on Twitter, but he can thank Bryant and his massive platform for helping put the White Mamba on the map.
