DETROIT -- Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story is unlikely to play in Wednesday’s series finale against the Tigers as he continues to recover from an illness. Story has not played since Saturday and is expected to miss his fourth straight game for Boston.
“I don’t believe so,” said manager Alex Cora when asked if Story would play.
Story played Boston’s first two games of the season but missed the finale in New York on Sunday and the first two games against the Tigers. He told The Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams that he’s dealing with food poisoning. Story flew separately from the team to Detroit on Monday and was at Comerica Park on Tuesday for Boston’s 5-3 win.
On Monday, Cora said Story was not ready to start playing again because he was “weak.” The Red Sox want him to regain strength before returning to the lineup. He might be ready to go Friday afternoon for Boston’s home opener against the Twins.
Story’s Red Sox tenure has gotten off to a unique start. Two days after officially signing his six-year, $140 million contract on March 23, he left spring training to fly home to Texas to be with his wife for the birth of the couple’s first child. He returned three days later and only saw action in five exhibition games before Opening Day. So far, he’s 1-for-8 with a walk and two strikeouts (including going 0-for-5 on Opening Day).
