Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse’s children struggle with some of the worst poverty in the entire country and have done so for years, but new census data released in March shows just how dire the situation is.

Here are the numbers that show the depth of the problem. If you can’t see the tables below, click here to open this story in a web browser.

  • The city’s overall child poverty rate of 48.4% is first in the country among U.S. cities with 100,000 people or more. That percentage translates into over 14,000 kids in Syracuse living below the poverty line, which in 2021 was $27,479 for a family of four with two kids.
  • The rate actually improved since 2015, but other cities experienced bigger drops, pushing Syracuse higher up a list no one wants to be on.
  • Over 41% of families with kids in the city have incomes below the poverty line.
  • It’s the highest percentage in the nation among larger cities.
  • The city is also among the leaders for lowest family incomes in the country, including families both with and without kids.
  • Over 7,600 families in Syracuse live on less than $25,000 a year in income and benefits, according to the census data. That’s over 27% of all families, the seventh-highest percentage among bigger U.S. cities.
  • Nearly 11% of the city’s families — over 3,000 of them — get by with less than $10,000 a year. That’s the fifth-highest rate in the country.

All of the poverty numbers come from the Census Bureau’s latest set of five-year population and demographic estimates. The estimates compile data from 2016 to 2020.

The bureau has urged some caution about the new estimates, given the disruptions the Covid-19 pandemic caused in its data collection.

But the new numbers are in line with Syracuse history. The city’s poverty has consistently been among the worst in the nation.
