Construction is approaching topping out on Calyer Place, a 40-story residential tower in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Designed by Cooper Robertson & Partners with SLCE Architects as the architect of record and developed by M&H Realty LLC, the 439-foot-tall tower will be joined by another 40-story structure and a pair of 19- and 14-story buildings. In total, the development will yield 1 million square feet with around 700,000 square feet of residential space spread across 700 apartments, as well as 10,000 square feet of commercial space, 7,160 square feet for unspecified community facility use, and over 600 parking spaces. The entire project is expected to cost $500 million. The land was once home to the historic Greenpoint Terminal Market, which suffered a ten-alarm fire in the mid-2000s and was demolished in 2017.
The reinforced concrete superstructure has risen steadily since our last update in late October, when the building had risen just above the podium levels. Now it is approaching its pinnacle with exterior work quickly climbing as well.
The tower enjoys an isolated position along the waterfront, with nearly all of the other new high-rise construction taking place further north in the ten-building Greenpoint Landing master plan. This lack of density will make for prime views over Brooklyn and of the Lower Manhattan and Midtown skylines to the west.
According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), the Calyer Place development and its four buildings have separate addresses: 65 Private Drive East Tower and 65 Private Drive West Tower for the two 40-story edifices; 29 West Street for the 19-story, 214-foot-tall structure; and 23 West Street. The latter is a topped-out, 14-story residential building developed by Halcyon Management Group that will bring 205 units to the neighborhood.
The only rendering of the complex is in the featured image above. This is outdated, but provides an impression of the scale of each tower and the context of the development in the neighborhood. The second 40-story tower will likely rise in the coming years.
YIMBY expects the current tallest building at Calyer Place to be finished sometime next year, while the entire site as a whole will take several more years of construction.
