Nearly five years after finding her baby's lost grave and reuniting with the police lieutenant that tried to save her son, assisted by a Poughkeepsie Journal reporter, Fortunate Higgins shared her story with Humans of New York.
Higgins, a Hyde Park resident, lost her 6-month-old son Elijah Williams in 2011 to sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS.
He was laid to rest through an indigent burial program, but the program did not cover a headstone. When Higgins returned to the graveyard after the funeral, she was unable to find a marker of where he was buried.
In 2015, then-Journal reporter John Ferro told her story, and helped reunite Higgins with Town of Lloyd Police Lieutenant James Janso, who had tried to save her son by performing CPR that night.

A baby's lost grave gets a headstone
Speaking with Humans of New York, an online initiative that has told the personal stories of thousands of New York residents, Higgins credited Ferro with helping her reunite with Janso and finding the once lost grave.
"Then one afternoon I received a call from a local reporter. He asked me if I was the mother of Elijah," she said in the post. "And he told me that he was working on a story about a police officer who was raising money to buy a headstone. It was Lieutenant Jim Janso. The same officer who'd given Elijah CPR. The reporter arranged for us to meet at Elijah's grave."
Journal photographer Patrick Oehler took photos of the moment.
In 2016, a new headstone had been placed at the grave thanks to fundraising efforts by Janso.
