“Paris for One and Other Stories”by Jo Jo Moyes
I am not normally a fan of short story collections but author Jo Jo Moyes has won me over with this one. The longest story is the one mentioned in the title. In it, a British woman books a weekend trip to Paris for herself and her boyfriend. When he opts not to come at the last minute, she is left on her own in the City of Lights. At first timid and reluctant to venture out of her hotel, she eventually succumbs to the romance of the situation and all unfolds happily.
The remaining 10 stories are much shorter but have equally creative plots. One features a woman whose gym bag is mistakenly swapped for someone else’s. She is forced to wear a pair of red Louboutin high heels for a day, and is amazed at how successful and confident she becomes.
In another a woman finds a mobile phone and starts texting with a strange man who sends romantic messages. This raises her awareness of her own inattentive husband.
The final story takes place on Christmas Eve as a woman frantically rushes around London trying to fulfill her husband’s demands for perfect gifts and food. Advice from a cab driver gives this one a happy ending.
Jo Jo Moyes is a gifted author, whether in long stories or short.
