When officers stand idle – allowing a colleague to suffocate a Black man to death as he pleads for breath – looting is not the story.
When generational impediments to health care make Black communities more vulnerable to a pandemic virus – looting is not the story.
When nationally Black and Brown women are paid 61 cents to the White man’s dollar – looting is not the story.
When Black men receive 20 percent longer sentences than White men for the same crime, while also being investigated, arrested and convicted at much higher rates – looting is not the story.
When Black trans-gender women are seven times more likely to be murdered than the general population – looting is not the story.
When the votes of Black people are system-atically and insidiously suppressed through voter ID, gerrymandering, voter roll purge, and carceral disenfranchisement – by North Carolina law – looting is not the story.
The story is tragic loss.
The story is identifying and decimating systemic racism.
The story is the nationwide, united fight for the security of Black lives.
