Editor’s note: Former Syracuse University player Demetris Nichols is playing for Boeheim’s Army in this year’s The Basketball Tournament. The coronavirus pandemic has forced the TBT to adjust its schedule and its field. The abbreviated 24-team event is being held in Columbus, Ohio. Players must pass multiple tests for Covid-19 and they are quarantined in one hotel.
Nichols will submit a daily diary to offer fans a window into a most unusual TBT.
Day 2 here in Columbus wasn’t so bad. It started with a knock on my hotel room door. Since our Covid test results weren’t back, they brought my breakfast.
After having my breakfast of oatmeal and fruit, I was told by Kevin Belbey, who is the general manager of Boeheim’s Army, that we should have our test results back by 11 a.m. Those next three hours felt like 10.
In passing the time, I did some reading and also worked out in my room with some pushups, core exercises and things of that nature.
I got on the phone with my family. My daughter told me she had received her report. She was very happy to tell me she had earned a 98 average. I guess school at home isn’t so bad. Very proud dad here.
Waiting for the test results part of me was nervous because you never know. The rules say if one player tests positive, the whole team has to go home and that happened to three teams.
I was relieved when my test results came back negative.
After getting test, we’re now able to go into the hotel lobby and even go outside and get some fresh air.
We had practice in the evening. The practice court was in a big meeting room in the hotel. After being stuck in our hotel rooms for over 24 hours, practice was a real stress reliever.
We ran our plays, did some shooting and got a good sweat going. It felt really good to be back on the court.
One of our teammates, John Gillon, didn’t get his test results back yet. That meant he couldn’t practice with us or leave his room. It doesn’t mean something bad’s going on. It’s just that they’re doing so many tests that some are delayed. I was told he should get his results back by the end of the night or first thing in the morning.
After practice we put our masks on before leaving the practice area and we picked up our dinner bags as we passed through the lobby.
Day 3 on Saturday is going to be very important because we’re required to take another Covid test. We’ll see what happens.
