Demetris Nichols’ TBT diary Day 3: Meals outside the room, an ACC vs. Big East debate and another Covid test - syracuse.com

Editor’s note: Former Syracuse University player Demetris Nichols is playing for Boeheim’s Army in this year’s The Basketball Tournament. The coronavirus pandemic has forced the TBT to adjust its schedule and its field. The abbreviated 24-team event is being held in Columbus, Ohio. Players must pass multiple tests for Covid-19 and they are quarantined in one hotel.

Nichols will submit a daily diary to offer fans a window into a most unusual TBT.

Saturday’s Day 3 was pretty much more of the same here. The only difference was we weren’t greeted by a knock on the door with someone delivering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Today we could order from UberEats or go down to the lobby and choose meals that were provided by the TBT.

Affer breakfast, we had to take our second Covid test, which involves spitting into a tube and sealing it tightly so it can be sent to the lab properly.

This is when boredom kicks in. I spent the morning calling family members on the phone. They were on their way to my home to celebrate my daughter’s birthday, which is (Sunday).

Before lunch, I got a call from Eric Devendorf. He wanted to work out in my room. It was perfect timing because I was getting hungry and I needed something to distract me.

After lunch, I took a nap and then I went downstairs. Each team has their own room, which is like a players’ lounge. You can watch TV, play cards, have a snack and just build and bond as a team.

We watched the first game of the TBT. It gave us some insight on what to expect.

We also had a great conversation between the older guys and the younger guys comparing the Big East with the ACC. Eric, Donte Greene and I held up the Big East. It was a good 10 to 15-minute conversation.

While we were watching the game, I wrote a birthday note to my daughter since I’m not going to be there tomorrow.

After watching the game, we were ready for practice. We made a big step up today by learning plays a little more and going over schemes and strategies. We did some shooting drills, which my team won, obviously. WE did a bunch of trash-talking, which is what we do.

Tomorrow is probably going to be a lot like today. The big thing will be watching more TBT games, including the one where the winner plays us on Tuesday.

And we’ll get our latest Covid results.
