I have read through Sunday’s front-page story about the month’s events at the Justice Center twice, searching for a mention of what led to the erecting of the fence, (“Portland’s Justice Center fence: A daunting place after dark for both protesters and police,” June 28). Nothing. No mention of protesters entering the Justice Center and starting a fire in an office where people (unarmed office workers) were doing their work. Seriously? Here and there, the story indicates that there has been violence on both sides, from the police and from the protesters. But this account makes the presence of the fence and the officers defending the Justice Center, which houses many county and city workers and jail inmates, seem like a power trip and provocation on the part of law enforcement. Shame on you! From conversations with some of those officers who do 12 to 20 hours shifts, I know that during the daytime hours, many positive conversations have taken place between the public and the officers. They may disagree but have done so respectful of one another. I am seriously questioning my subscription to the Oregonian if your reporting omits such essential information.
