Marist Women’s Basketball Standout Kendall Krick Writes For HVSR
EDITOR’S NOTE: So, we got this nice note from a Marist College student who said she was interested in sports and was inquiring about an internship. She introduced herself, but we didn’t need the head’s up.
Of course we know who Kendall Krick is – a member of the Marist women’s basketball team who played her high school ball in Arizona under coach Karen Self, formerly Karen O’Connor, who led Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park to the 1987 New York State championship.
You’ll start seeing Kendall’s byline in Hudson Valley Sports Report but before we have her start doing stories, we figured we’d make her first assignment easy for her – and fun for us.
Throughout the rest of the college basketball season, Kendall will write a weekly diary on her off days, giving us an inside look at the team and the games. — Rich Thomaselli

Marist College Women’s Basketball
The Marist College women’s basketball moved on in the MAAC tournament with a 63-55 quarterfinal win over the Siena Saints on Wednesday.
During the regular season, Marist handed Siena two double-digit losses in February. However, these games were played without Siena’s top player and MAAC leading scorer Isis Young.
That led to a rocky start for my teammates and I. The Saints started off hot from the 3-pt line and led by as much as 11 in the second quarter. On our end of the floor, we were finding open players and getting open shots but not enough were falling to catch up with Siena.
Defense, as it has been all season long, was the key to our victory on Wednesday.
Once we finally started getting stops, we were really able to cut into the deficit and fight our way back into the game. Another critical part of having good defense is that it relieves pressure on the offensive end and each shot doesn’t feel like “I need to make this so we can hang on in this game.”
Going into halftime, we were up by two after a solid finish to the second quarter. Coming back out of the locker room, the message was clear that we needed to keep up the defensive intensity.
We did just that.
Every time Young tried driving there was someone who was swarming her from the help side and another person rotating over. Trinasia Kennedy and I were in charge of guarding Young and we held her well below her season average on 4-for-17 shooting.
In the fourth quarter Siena made a run but we remained calm and continued to take care of the ball. The main thing we need to improve on is free throw shooting at the end of the game.
Sarah Barcello, my best friend and fellow Arizonan, had a great game on both ends of the court and finished with 20 points. Captains Allie Best and Willow Duffell also came up huge in the win. Best dished out six assists while Duffell ended with a double-double.
Every single person on our roster, from the coaches, to the players on the court and the players on the bench, were giving 100% effort in their role. The energy was great and extremely contagious as we continued to motivate each other throughout the win.
Duffell told us before the game that she wanted to have to drag our exhausted bodies off the court after the game because we gave it our all.
Now it’s on to play Fairfield in the semifinals on Friday morning.
