The former 98 Degrees member and his wife addressed Simpson's memoir on the TODAY Show in February 2020 when it first came out, where he revealed he didn't read the book and didn't know what she shared in it.
"I'll be honest -- I obviously haven't read the book so I don't know what she said or what she revealed there, but I'm certainly happy for her and her life. I know she's happy for us," Lachey said of his ex-wife's tell-all at the time. "There's definitely a mutual respect there ... obviously it was a long time ago; we've all moved on."
While the two pop stars were married from 2002 to 2005, both released competing breakup records in the wake of their high-profile divorce. (Lachey's What's Left of Me -- featuring singles such as the title track and "I Can't Hate You Anymore" -- hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in May 2006, while Simpson's A Public Affair debuted at No. 5 three months later.)
ET also reported that in addition to the new diary entries, the "I Wanna Love You Forever" singer wrote a new introduction to her New York Times best-seller about how she told her eldest daughter, Maxwell, 8, about being sexually abused as a child. When she first released Open Book last year, Simpson revealed for the first time that she was abused by a daughter of a family friend when she was just 6 years old while they shared a bed during overnight visits. She writes in the introduction about her decision to tell Maxwell about when a fellow abuse survivor approached the two during a book signing in New York and became emotional.
"When she walked away, Maxwell asked, 'What was she talking about?'" the Dukes of Hazzard actress recalled. "This was going to have to be the time for our talk. Parents have to seize these moments when you have your kids' attention."
