TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) - Idaho pianist Heather Platts and Nashville guitarist Bruce Michael Miller share a little bit more than just a name on the stage.
The Twin Falls couple and members of the musical duo Crazy Love have a unique life story that was birthed in their combined love of music and culminated with a successful kidney transplant.
Their story began in Nashville where Bruce would meet Heather in-person for the first time.
“I suggested that she make a record,“ Bruce said. “I produce records, and I just thought her writing was amazing.”
After meeting in person in Nashville, Bruce would ultimately find himself in Idaho, traveling for more than just the music.
“I moved here to be with Heather,” Bruce said. “I had never heard of Twin Falls before.”
From here, Heather and Bruce have traveled across the country doing what they do best: writing, playing, singing and ultimately sharing a message of faith and togetherness in musical performances across the country. It’s life that both enjoy today, but required them both to overcome some hurdles not many people encounter.
“Bruce had been of course dealing with this health issue,” Heater said.
Bruce had been dealing with the effects of chronic condition — kidney disease, which had worsened.
“So I was at the point where it was either dialysis, get lucky with kidney from a cadaver donor or die because I was that sick,” Bruce said.
It was a world of unknown. According to donatelife.net, 110,000 people are currently waiting for lifesaving organ transplant, with another person added to list every 10 minutes, and 22 people losing their life each day because an organ is not donated in time. Lucky for Bruce, he had Heather.
“It’s something that I wasn’t really aware of, so I started looking into it.” Heather said. “I did some of the test and found out I was a match.”
In August of last year, Bruce and Heather would undergo successful kidney donation surgery.
“We’re coming up on our ‘kidney-versery’,” Heather said.
An experience that’s brought them closer together and resonated through their musical performances.
“Like living on borrowed time was really like my life living up to the point where I really didn’t know what was going to happen,” Bruce said in describing one of Crazy Love’s songs.
Today, life is filled with more certainty for the Twin Falls couple, and their story is one their reminded of when they wake up in the morning.
“I think I said it is this morning, thank you for saving my life,” Bruce said.
Bruce and Heather hope their story inspires others, and encourage those who haven’t to register and become an organ donor.
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many of Crazy Love’s shows to be done online. Crazy Love will be hosting an online “Kidney-versary” celebration show on Aug. 6 and 7, which will celebrate on year since the successful kidney donation surgery.
