GLEN CARBON — A class of District 7 fifth-graders recently hosted a virtual book release with Jeff Kinney, author of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Deep End.”
Nine classes from all around the country were selected to meet the critically-acclaimed children’s book author, including Albert Cassens Elementary School. Teacher Rob Nunn and his fifth-grade class worked with Scholastic Book Club to help make the book release happen.
The new book marks number 15 in the series and follows Greg Heffley and his family on a cross-country camping trip. But the trip does not go as expected as they find themselves stranded at an RV park that’s not the paradise they wished for.
“I was a teacher advisor for Scholastic in 2019 and would give feedback to its headquarters in New York and because of that relationship, they reached out asking if I’d be interested,” Nunn said.
After getting the event confirmed by principal Tiana Montgomery, Nunn’s students were excited but also slightly unsure about the virtual aspect.
“They didn’t fully grasp it at first but once they realized it wasn’t a recording and they’d be able to interact with the author, they got extremely excited,” he said.
Themed a pool party, Nunn and his class took part in activities that were both enjoyable and educational. For Nunn, the unique academic event was about inspiring his students to keep reading.
“Diary of a Wimpy Kid is an unbelievably popular series. There are those kids who don’t consider themselves readers diving into the books and those who read 600-page novels are also reading them,” Nunn added. “All ages love it and for me, it doesn’t matter how old you are or what your reading level is, as long as I see a book in their hands, that makes me happy.
The party occurred virtually on Oct. 21 and was recently published on YouTube after being edited.
“It was kind of fun to watch the kids realize that when you watch TV, there is a lot of editing and recording going on behind the scenes to make it appear live,” Nunn said.
