AMHERST - The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is inviting visitors to purchase tickets for a “drive thru” pool party book launch Monday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. of “The Deep End,” the 15th installment in Jeff Kinney’s popular “Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series.
Kinney, whose newest book debuted in 25 different countries Oct. 27, is scheduled to be present for the event that involves participants driving through a series of stations inspired by the book’s adventures encountered by character Greg Heffley and his family during a rained upon cross-country camping trip.
The drive-thru concludes with Kinney, mindful of the social distancing rules of the coronavirus pandemic, presenting signed copies of his book to participants in their cars with the help of a six-foot pool skimmer.
Kinney and his family are Massachusetts residents who own the Unlikely Story Bookstore and Cafe in Plainville.
All attendees must have a timed ticket to participate in this event.
A ticket includes a pre-signed copy of “The Deep End” and admission for one vehicle.
Additional signed copies of “The Deep End” and other signed books by the author are available for purchase online from The Carle Bookshop.
Participants are encouraged to decorate their car for the drive-thru. The family with the best-decorated car will win a boxed set of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books.
Kinney is among the artists with work in the museum’s online exhibit, “Now & Then: Contemporary Illustrators and their Childhood Art."
Another online event, Writing and Illustrating Graphic Novels for Teens/Adults, is being offered by the museum Thursday, Nov. 12, from 7 to 8 p.m.
The program features graphic artists M.T. Anderson and Jo Rioux (“The Daughters of Ys"), Mike Curato (”Flamer"), and Kiku Hughes (“Displacement”), and will be moderated by Courtney Waring, the museum’s director of education.
Books can be purchased at The Carle Bookshop.
The event is free and registration can be done online.
