• WUFT News: Alachua County Growth Management Area Amendment Still Unclear As Vote Recount Ensues. “Ballot scanners dinged and hummed all day and night at the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections office Sunday, as 143,000-plus ballots were recounted to decide a proposed charter amendment that would give the county greater control over area growth and development.”

• Gainesville Sun ($): UF files motion to dismiss freshman orientation fee lawsuit. “The Gainesville Sun investigated the UF Preview program and reported in September 2019 that for more than a decade UF billed students hundreds of dollars for a costly and mandatory version of the university’s new-student orientation when state law caps orientation fees at $35.”

• The Alligator: Women win big in Alachua County, Florida and national politics. “Both Democrat and Republican women won big Tuesday night in several Florida and Alachua County races. Three newly elected representatives will join other female officials who currently serve Alachua County, such as County Manager Michele Lieberman, County Attorney Sylvia Torres and Supervisor of Elections Kim Barton.”

• WMFE: Marion County looks to continue remote learning option, awaits state decision. “Marion County school officials have been telling parents whose online students are struggling with grades or conduct to return them to face-to-face learning. But even so, the district does not want to eliminate its online option next semester.”

• WUFT News: Soaring Ticket Sales Keep Oaks Mall Carnival In The Game. “The annual Oaks Mall Carnival opened its gates nine months later than anticipated this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will remain open until Nov. 15.”

• NPR News: Tropical Storm Eta Could Become A Hurricane, Dousing Florida With A Foot Of Rain. “Tropical Storm Eta made landfall late Sunday in the Florida Keys. The southern part of the state faces a potential one-two punch from Eta, which could strengthen into a hurricane and drop up to a foot of rain before retreating to the Gulf of Mexico to gather strength for round two.”

• Tampa Bay Times ($): Florida adds 6,820 coronavirus cases Sunday, 22 deaths. “Per capita, Florida’s death rate is the 11th highest in the nation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By Sunday, the state was averaging 48.9 new deaths each day, records show. According to the state’s data, roughly one in every 25 people in Florida has tested positive for the virus.”

• Fresh Take Florida: Shy Trump Voters And Caller ID: Why The Polls Got (And Keep Getting) It Wrong. “The 2020 election – historic for its high turnout in the middle of a pandemic and extraordinary political divisiveness – might also be famous for the inaccuracy of pollsters.
