Mark Pavelich, 63, was found dead at a treatment facility in Minnesota on Friday. The cause and manner of death are still pending. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, he was undergoing treatment as part of a civil commitment for assaulting his neighbour in August 2019 after he believed the man spiked his beer.
It was believed that he suffered from CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), while being diagnosed with delusions, paranoia and post-tramautic stress disorder by psychologists. Pavelich was found to be incompetent to stand trial because he was mentally ill and dangerous. After showing some progress, he was moved to the center where he eventually died.
His life took some tragic turns after he assisted on Mike Eruzione’s winning goal against the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics. The "Miracle" hockey star sold his gold medal for more than $250,000 in 2014 to help provide for his daughter. It came two years after his wife, Kara, died in an accidental fall. Fortunately, the puck ended up with a fan who attended many of Pavelich's high school and college games.
Pavelich’s legal and psychological troubles are a heartbreaking part of his story, but things were apparently looking up for him. One of his attorneys in his civil commitment, Carolyn Bruno, talked about her client’s progress following his death. She stated that he was dedicated to his recovery and the legal matters were going in a positive direction.
Pavelich will be remembered fondly for his successes at the college level, on the international stage and in the NHL. He posted 137 goals and 329 points in 355 games with the New York Ranges, Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks.
Mental health initiatives have come a long way, but the work isn’t done yet. We need to continue to take care of ourselves and each other. Seek help and keep the conversations going. It makes a big difference.

WASHINGTON 1 BOSTON 5
The Bruins bounced back from a 2-1 shootout setback at the hands of the Capitals on Wednesday with a resounding victory on Friday to end Washington's four-game win spree.
Brad Marchand led the way with two goals and one assist. He has three goals and four helpers over a four-game point streak.
Patrice Bergeron notched one goal and one assist in Friday’s contest.
Nick Ritchie and Trent Frederic had the other goals in the win for the Bruins.
Jakub Vrana got the Capitals on the board at the 13:36 mark of the third period.
Charlie McAvoy earned two helpers, while Nicklas Backstrom, T.J. Oshie, Craig Smith, David Krejci, Jake DeBrusk, David Pastrnak and Matt Grzelcyk picked up one assist each.
It was the 700th career assist of Backstrom’s career.
Vitek Vanecek was pulled after he allowed four goals on 18 shots. Ilya Samsonov stopped six of seven shots in relief.
Jaroslav Halak turned aside 31 shots for his fifth win in eight starts.
Tom Wilson had 10 penalty minutes thanks to fights with Frederic, who finished with 18 minutes in the sin bin, and Jarred Tinordi. He became public enemy number one after a high hit on Brandon Carlo, who left the game due to an upper-body injury.

TAMPA BAY 3 CHICAGO 4 (SO)
The Blackhawks dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Lightning on Thursday thanks to a buzzer beater and rebounded with another strong effort in a shootout victory.
Alex DeBrincat scored twice in the match to give 14 goals on the year and 101 over his NHL career. He has amassed six markers and six assists during an eight-game point spree.
His goals came after Anthony Cirelli and Alex Killorn (power play) gave Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead.
Killorn also assisted on a third-period marker by Ryan McDonagh for a two-point effort. Additionally, he was credited with a game-high eight shots on target.
Dominik Kubalik netted the game-tying goal shortly after McDonagh’s tally.
Ondrej Palat, Patrick Kane and Adam Boqvist collected two assists apiece, while Duncan Keith, Victor Hedman, Brayden Point and Tyler Johnson contributed one helper each.
Philipp Kurashev was the only scorer in the shootout on six total attempts.
Curtis McElhinney stopped 24 of 27 shots in the defeat, while Malcolm Subban turned aside 39 of 42 shots in the victory.
ST. LOUIS 3 LOS ANGELES 2 (OT)
The Blues won a fourth straight game on Friday thanks to late comeback win over the Kings.
David Perron scored his second goal of the game at the 19:16 mark of the third period to send the match into overtime.
Mike Hoffman, who also assisted on Perron’s game-tying tally, provided the game winner just 1:30 into the extra session.
Perron opened the scoring early in the first frame during a Blues power play.
Jeff Carter and Dustin Brown (power play) gave Los Angeles a 2-1 lead, but they were unable to hold on.
Ryan O’Reilly posted three helpers, while Brayden Schenn, Torey Krug, Anze Kopitar, Andreas Athanasiou and Tobias Bjornfot registered one assist each.
Cal Petersen stopped 19 shots in the loss, while Ville Husso blocked 28 shots for his fourth straight victory.

ANAHEIM 2 COLORADO 3 (OT)
The Avalanche won a second straight game and kicked off what is scheduled to be a nine-game home stand with a come-from-behind victory over Anaheim on Friday.
The Ducks built a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Adam Henrique and Jakob Silfverberg.
Brandon Saad potted the game-tying marker late in the third period and Valeri Nichushkin’s second of the match was the game winner 2:45 into the extra period.
Saad added two helpers, while Rickard Rakell, Tyson Jost, Jonas Donskoi, Dan Renouf and Devon Toews recorded one assist apiece.
John Gibson blocked 31 shots in the loss, while Philipp Grubauer stopped 26 shots for the his 12th victory in 18 starts.
The Avalanche made Nathan MacKinnon (upper body) a late scratch after clearing him to play following the morning skate.
MINNESOTA 5 ARIZONA 1
The Wild cruised to a victory over the Coyotes on Friday after scoring three goals in the first period. Minnesota ended a two-game losing skid in the process.
Mats Zuccarello and Jordan Greenway posted one goal and one assist apiece.
Kirill Kaprizov and Marcus Foligno collected two assists each, while Jonas Brodin, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Jordan Oesterle picked up one helper apiece.
Brad Hunt, Kevin Fiala and Nick Bjugstad were Minnesota’s other goal scorers.
Clayton Keller had the lone marker of the match for the Coyotes.
Antti Raanta stopped 22 of 27 shots in the loss, while Kaapo Kahkonen turned aside 24 shots for his sixth consecutive win.
VEGAS 5 SAN JOSE 4 (OT)
The Golden Knights stretched their win streak to five games despite blowing a two-goal lead in the third period on Friday night.
Max Pacioretty, who accounted for two goals one assist, scored the game winner 1:25 into the extra period.
Mark Stone and Erik Karlsson picked up two assists each. while William Carrier, William Karlsson, Ryan Reaves, Jonathan Marchessault, Alex Pietrangelo, Alec Martinez, Evander Kane, Ryan Donato and Timo Meier earned one helper apiece.
Logan Couture and Kevin Labanc scored in the third period to get the Sharks a point in the standings.
Reilly Smith and Chandler Stephenson got goals for Vegas in the first period, while Alex Tuch gave the team a 4-2 lead just 28 seconds into the third frame.
Brent Burns (power play) and Matt Nieto lit the lamp for San Jose in the second stanza.
Martin Jones got the hook after he allowed three goals on eight shots in just 22:16 of playing time. Devan Dubnyk stopped 17 of 19 shots and picked up the loss.
Oscar Dansk, who ended Marc-Andre Fleury’s streak of 10 straight starts, blocked 25 shots in his season debut for the victory.
