Marist Women’s Basketball Standout Kendall Krick Writes For HVSR

EDITOR’S NOTE: So, we got this nice note from a Marist College student who said she was interested in sports and was inquiring about an internship. She introduced herself, but we didn’t need the head’s up.
Of course we know who Kendall Krick is – a member of the Marist women’s basketball team who played her high school ball in Arizona under coach Karen Self, formerly Karen O’Connor, who led Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park to the 1987 New York State championship.
You’ll start seeing Kendall’s byline in Hudson Valley Sports Report but before we have her start doing stories, we figured we’d make her first assignment easy for her – and fun for us.
Throughout the rest of the college basketball season, Kendall will write a weekly diary on her off days, giving us an inside look at the team and the games. — Rich Thomaselli

Marist College Women’s Basketball

It has been two weeks since Marist Women’s basketball has played a game because of COVID-19 cancellations. Our last game series was Valentine’s Day weekend against Siena when we improved our record to 14-2.

With no games to prepare for, our schedule for the week is pretty routine. We are tested for COVID-19 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays before practice. Practice is each day of the week and it goes from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. but the majority of us are out on the court by 10:30 so that we can put some extra shots up.

Occasionally, coach (Brian) Giorgis will join in on the extra shooting and practice what he calls a “potty shot,” which is better known as a granny shot, or simply an underhanded shot.

He’s actually pretty good at it!

On two days out of the week we lift after practice and we do our Stability Enhancement System exercises for injury prevention.

Since we do not have games on the schedule, the past couple weeks of practice have felt like a return to preseason. Preseason practices always consist of longer full-court drills, scrimmages, running, and are overall more intense physically. Without games to prepare for, it has been important to practice this way in order to stay in game shape.  Our coaches have been mixing up the teams for scrimmages and it has been very competitive, especially when Giorgis says that the losing team is running. Although, competing in practice is fun, it is no surprise that having an opponent to prepare for and games to look forward to is more exciting.

After practice, we usually make a run to Dunkin’ Donuts for some caffeine to help us get through our classes. Dunkin’ Donuts could easily sponsor Marist Women’s basketball because of the amount of business we give them. Once I have Dunkin’ in hand, I am ready for classes.

In order to stay in our “bubble” we are all joining classes online through Zoom or WebEx as long as it is okay with our professors. Having classes online provides more flexibility in my schedule but I do miss going in person and seeing my classmates and professors.

Practice and classes are the main two things that fill my schedule as of now since there isn’t much to do during a pandemic, especially when it could jeopardize our season. This leaves me with a decent amount of free time but my teammates and I always find entertaining ways to fill it.

One of our favorite ways to spend our free time is watching reality T.V. shows like The Bachelor, Survivor, and a rising favorite – Love Island. Our Director of Basketball Operations, Elyse Schlump, also watches The Bachelor and our Tuesday morning practices usually start with discussing the drama on the previous night’s episode.

This week brings on two exciting things for Marist Women’s basketball; games and March. We will be playing our last games of the regular season against Saint Peter’s on Thursday and Friday. After our series against Saint Peters we will be preparing to travel to Atlantic City and begin the MAAC tournament.
