On paper, the New York Yankees have no need for Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story.
With Gio Urshela, Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu and Luke Voit, the Yankees’ infield seems set for the foreseeable future.
But a player like Story doesn’t come available very often. The 28-year-old is a two-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award recipient.
Story is scheduled to be a free agent following the 2021 season, and if the Rockies get the sense Story will walk, they may be inclined to move him before the non-waiver trade deadline.

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden put together a list of five MLB trades that he’d like to see before Opening Day. At the top of the list is a Yankees-Rockies blockbuster deal. His proposal:
Yankees acquire: SS Trevor Story, RHP Germán Márquez, RHP Daniel Bard
Rockies acquire: RHP Deivi García, RHP Jonathan Loaisiga, 3B Gio Urshela, INF Miguel Andújar
As for Bowden’s reasoning:
Of course, a deal of this magnitude is going to be painful for the Yankees because they would have to give up significant players to get this type of package. They aren’t going to include top outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez in any deal (and they shouldn’t), but in this case, they would have to part with top pitching prospect Deivi García, which would not be easy, but he has to be the headliner going to the Rockies if this trade is going to happen. ... For the Yankees, this trade would dramatically improve their chances of a world championship in 2021.
The catch here is this: it would require Hal Steinbrenner to give general manager Brian Cashman the green light to go over the luxury tax. And all we’ve heard this winter from the Bronx is that Cashman has to keep the payroll below the threshold.
But if Steinbrenner changes his mind, and Cashman could pull off this deal, the Yankees would be able to move Torres back to second base, where he’s better-suited, and slide LeMahieu over to third base.
Plus, adding Story to a club which includes Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton would give the Yankees, who already have one of the deepest lineups in baseball, a murderer’s row which would be unparalleled in today’s game.
