Hi, I’m digital design writer Zoë Sessums. Follow along each week as I try my hand at a DIY project in and around my house. I’ll cover the inspiration, expert advice, and step-by-step plans of everything from challenging builds to simple renovations. This month’s undertaking: an accent wall!

If you ever need a jolt of positive interior energy, spend a few minutes scrolling through Breegan Jane’s Instagram—it’s filled with color, pattern, and creativity. The interior designer and lifestyle blogger seems to have done it all, from designing music studios to outfitting kids rooms to staging luxury yachts, so I thought she would be the perfect person to help me think through my ideal accent wall.

Zoë Sessums: How do you go about choosing an accent wall in a space?

Breegan Jane: I first think about the scale that I need to fill. I consider the size or shape I have to work with: Is it long and narrow, or high and wide? I then work to figure out visuals that will match the story or statement the space needs to make. Whether it’s a residential or commercial client, what’s in the space will convey a story or subliminal message, and I want the wall and decor to lean into that. When I created the accent wall for Native, a restaurant with a strong female chef, I chose a photo of a woman feeding a lion to personify the power the chef wielded with her culinary skills. The accent wall echoed the messaging of the people and space, not necessarily just a color profile. Things get even more fun from there!

Where do you get inspiration for going bold with colors or patterns?

It’s so cliché to say, but practice really does make perfect. Going bold is something you get used to the more you try and experiment with various elements as you develop your career and craft. Even if it may be uncomfortable for me—or my client—I at least try different things and combinations with colors and patterns. The more I do it, the more confident I get with each venture, and the last project becomes the inspiration for the next.

What are great ways to think about what color, texture, or material to use with an accent wall?

I always make sure the accent wall supports balance of the overall space. No exceptions. The interior design elements in a room play this game of see-saw with each other, and the accent wall is a part of that. You don’t want the accent wall to look and feel weighty and have the other side of the space feel lean or visually lacking.
