Winter is coming. So are massive contracts for some of the best shortstops in Major League Baseball.
The bumper crop of free agents includes the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Corey Seager, Colorado Rockies’ Trevor Story, Houston Astros’ Carlos Correa and New York Mets’ Javier Baez.
All of them will look to land nine-figure contracts. Question is: Will the New York Yankees be one of the clubs ponying up?
Yes, the Yankees need a shortstop after moving Gleyber Torres back to second base. But New York already has a pair of $300-million contracts on the payroll (Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton) and Aaron Judge is in line for a long-term contract extension.
That brings us to a report Monday by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale:
It’s hardly the news that the agents for all of the star-studded shortstop class want to hear, but the Yankees privately insist they won’t be a major player in the shortstop market. They want a shortstop on a one- or two-year contract, coveting Andrelton Simmons, believing that prized shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe will be ready by 2023, and will be a big-time star.

SNY’s Andy Martino reported over the weekend the Yankees tried to acquire Simmons from the Minnesota Twins before the July 30 trade deadline.
As for Volpe, he is the top-ranked prospect in the Yankees organization, according to MLB Pipeline. The 20-year-old New Jersey native, a first-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft (No. 30 overall), started the 2021 season at Low-A Tampa, where he hit .302 with 12 home runs in 54 games. At High-A Hudson Valley, Volpe continued to rake, hitting .286 with 15 home runs in 55 games.
