OHIO — Pouring a glass of water is probably something you don’t think twice about, unless you’re Robin Brown.

What You Need To Know

  • Brown has two daughters, and said in 1999, her youngest daughter had to be hospitalized at the age of 4 due to lead poisoning

  • She said this experience inspired her to learn more about lead poisoning and how families can be exposed through a variety of sources

  • She founded the Concerned Citizens Organized Against Lead Organization

“Our story of lead poisoning started in 1999,” she said.

Brown has two daughters, and said that year, her youngest daughter had to be hospitalized at the age of 4 due to lead poisoning.

“What I didn't know then was that her crisis was just as much of an emergency as someone having a heart attack or anything else because her level, at 70 micrograms per deciliter, could lead to death, seizure or coma,” she said.

She said this experience inspired her to learn more about lead poisoning and how families can be exposed through a variety of sources from lead-based paint, lead in dust and poisoning of tap water in homes that have lead pipes.

This is why she founded the Concerned Citizens Organized Against Lead Organization, an organization working to ensure all children have a fighting chance.

“It takes a collaborative effort to work on this,” she said. “You have to have all levels accounted for. We can't just fix a part of it if we're not fixing it wholly.”

Through her work she said she’s also noticed a racial disparity when it comes to care.

“If you are lacking the wealth, if you are lacking the education, you can't even advocate,” she said. “Like for me, once I found out what the poisoning was, I wasn't stopping because (of) those five days of treatment that my daughter received.”

Brown said she will continue to speak out, advocate and educate others about the dangers of lead because of her love for her daughters until progress is made.

“We should not be having this discussion in the next five years about it, but we know it's going to take longer because we're just getting the traction started,” she said. “We have to expedite this as if it was a pandemic because it is an epidemic.”
