Sara’s Diary, Day 93 without baseball: London is calling - Bleed Cubbie Blue

I think I am the only person in my crew of Cubs fans who didn’t have plans to be in London this weekend. I’ve basically had this weekend on my calendar as the peak FOMO weekend in 2020 for a year, but given some projects at work there was just no way I was going to be able to go to London for Cubs vs. Cardinals this year.

Who knew that a pandemic was going to cancel everything, including baseball up to and including the London Series? Hopefully once baseball gets its act together and figured out how to play in 2020 they can extend the deal to host the London Series to future seasons and the Cubs and Cardinals will get another shot. It would be lovely to introduce London to the best rivalry in sports.

But it got me thinking about all of the trips that make up a year and how long it will be until we can take some of them again. I’ve already cancelled trips to Boston and Albuquerque. The Boston trip was to attend the memorial of a friend, that memorial has been pushed back to August, but it’s unclear we’ll even be able to hold it then. Albuquerque was a hybrid work/fun trip. I was supposed to help at debate nationals (Yes, it does exist. Yes, it’s as geeky as you think.) but that has long since been moved to a virtual venue. I’m bummed because it was going to be a chance to introduce a friend of mine to a lot of family members and the area my family is from. That trip has obviously been indefinitely postponed, but with any luck New Mexico will still exist after the pandemic.

I think it will be a long time before I’m comfortable jumping on a plane again. Everything about airplanes (cramped environment, recycled air) strikes me as problematic during a pandemic. However, I haven’t given up on the idea of a pandemic road trip this summer. As much as I love living in Wrigleyville, it’s sort of incredible that I haven’t left a five mile radius in over three months. It’s been decades since I’ve stayed in the same spot for so long. Plus, even in college I’d drive home frequently to see my parents a couple hours away.

I’m not sure where this summer will take me. I am sure that I will get there in a car rather than a plane, but there could be any number of places. I just know that I am in pretty desperate need of a change of scenery soon.
