Common Sense – Jessica’s Story Transcript and Sources

PART ONE

Hello and welcome to Common Sense. This week I want to showcase the recovery story of Jessica Poulos of Moses Lake. Jessica, putting it lightly, has had a rough go of it. She’s a mother of three who just last week celebrated her third year being completely free of drugs and alcohol, and that might not sound like a big deal to you, but once you learn a little more about her backstory I think you will agree with me that it is a very big deal indeed.

And that’s where I want to pick up on Jessica’s story. With her childhood and her relationship with her mother. We’ll get to the other stuff later. Here’s chapter one.

Stay tuned after the break to hear the rest of her story. I’m Dominick Bonny and this is Common Sense.

PART TWO

Welcome back. Let’s jump back into Jessica’s story. Before the break, we heard about her relationship with her mom. Now we will learn about the next major relationship in her life. What some of us take for granted is being able to build and maintain healthy relationships, but for people like Jessica, that’s not a given. Positive, healthy relationships can push you to be a better person, but the converse is also true. Toxic relationships with people who don’t have your best interests at heart can drag you down and keep you down. Let’s take a look.

Jess and her sister were so close to getting out before things really took a turn for the worse, and it’s clear that she understands that now. Let’s take a look at the next chapter.

So she got into a treatment center in Yakima and she could take her kids with her. Stay tuned after the break to hear the rest of the story.

PART THREE

Welcome back. Things have started looking up for Jess, but then it goes even further south and I want to give you a trigger warning here, because the next part of her story involves sexual assault, and while she doesn’t go into detail it might be upsetting for survivors and some viewers.

This is a clear-cut case of the system failing her big time. The person at her home did the right thing, the hospital and medical caregivers did the right thing, but then law enforcement, specifically that officer, did the wrong thing.

After this, Jessica’s story really goes off the rails: one of her best friends is murdered, and her mother dies, and her third child is born, which is actually a huge blessing that helps her pull things out of a nosedive. I only have a half-hour for this show, so I have to keep it brief, but I would encourage you to watch the full, nearly hour-long interview with Jess on the Central Washington Recovery Coalition’s YouTube channel. The link is in the show notes on this episode on NCWLIFE.com, just go to the full episodes tab and find Common Sense. I have said this before but I am constantly impressed by the perseverance and bravery it takes for folks like Jessica to get clean, stay clean and bare their souls like this for the world to see. If you are someone who has never dealt with addiction issues, either personally or in your family, it might give you some insight and empathy for what these folks go through, and that’s great. But what I really hope is that people who might be in their darkest days, suffering from addiction, ruining their lives, their health, and their relationships might see Jessica’s story and think, “I am not alone, and if she can get better, maybe I can too.”

I will leave you with how Jess got her life back on track, and how she’s stayed clean for three years, and why her future looks bright.
