SANTA CRUZ – The construction process has begun on a seven-story mixed-use apartment building on the corners of Pacific Avenue and Laurel and Front streets.
The project, which will offer 205 units, was approved by the Santa Cruz City Council in December of 2018. The ground floor of the project will also make room for retail and restaurant space in conjunction with the city’s downtown plan. The project underwent an appeal that lasted through most of 2019, but was ultimately denied.
Construction of the building is expected to take roughly two years, with an unspecified completion date sometime in 2023, according to a press release from the development company, Anton DevCo.
While construction on the building itself won’t begin for a few more weeks, crews began the process of moving the building utilities underground, according to Assistant Director of Public Works Chris Schneiter. The process is one that is required as part of the projects approval by the city.
This portion of the construction process can affect traffic, sidewalks and bike lanes on Front Street from Cathcart Avenue to Laurel Street, as well as on Laurel street from Front Street to Pacific Avenue. The undergrounding of utilities is expected to take up to three months to complete, according to Schneiter.
Several buildings will need to be demolished in order to make room for the new apartment building. However, demolition permits have not been issued yet, according to Principal Planner Samantha Haschert. The timeline for when demolition will begin is still unknown.
The site of the project has also been the scene for recent controversy. Food Not Bombs, a nonprofit organization that aims to feed the homeless, was evicted nearly a week ago from the parking lot where the construction work is starting.
Food Not Bombs has since moved to the parking lot across the street.
