Marist Women’s Basketball Standout Kendall Krick Writes For HVSR

EDITOR’S NOTE: So, we got this nice note from a Marist College student who said she was interested in sports and was inquiring about an internship. She introduced herself, but we didn’t need the head’s up.

Of course we know who Kendall Krick is – a member of the Marist women’s basketball team who played her high school ball in Arizona under coach Karen Self, formerly Karen O’Connor, who led Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park to the 1987 New York State championship.

You’ll start seeing Kendall’s byline in Hudson Valley Sports Report but before we have her start doing stories, we figured we’d make her first assignment easy for her – and fun for us.

Throughout the rest of the college basketball season, Kendall will write a weekly diary on her off days, giving us an inside look at the team and the games. — Rich Thomaselli

Marist College Women’s Basketball

Saturday was supposed to be game day for Marist Women’s basketball. My teammates and I were originally going to be waking up early for shootaround and walkthrough – our last chance to prepare and review the game plan for our opponent, Iona.

After walkthrough, we would pack our uniforms, warmups, shoes and any other items we need for gameday. Next, we would eat our pregame meal, four hours before tipoff as always, and then climb into the bus with full stomachs, nerves, and excitement for the game.

Instead, I spent the day sleeping in until 10:30 on a complete off day from basketball – a rare occurrence at this point in the season.

About halfway through the week, we found out that our games against Iona had been canceled due to a positive Covid-19 test in Iona’s tier-1 testing group. We had already worked through a full day of practice that was focused on going over their plays, their strengths and weaknesses, and how we were going to defend them.

Coach Erin (Doughty), our Associate Head Coach, was in charge of Iona’s scout and had already spent time detailing their key players, style of play, and clipping game film for us to watch and learn from. All of this time and effort spent just for our upcoming games to get postponed.

As frustrating as it may be for all involved, that is the reality of this season. Up to this point, I believe my teammates, coaches, and I have handled this as best as we can. We focus on controlling what we can control and being flexible.

We do our very best to keep ourselves and each other safe from Covid-19, we practice hard each day, and we are grateful for each game we get to play this year.

Lesson learned – nothing can be taken for granted.
