BOYS BKB: PINCONNING 58, SANFORD MERIDIAN 39

If anyone was wondering if Pinconning is the real deal, the question seems to have been answered.

A victory over the four-time reigning league champion should suffice.

Pinconning continued its stunning start to the season with an eye-opening victory, knocking off Jack Pine Conference super power Sanford Meridian 58-39.

The Spartans, who haven’t had a winning season in 11 years, are now 5-0 on the year.

Zachary Johnson provided plenty of punch in the win, posting 28 points and 12 rebounds. Tommy Yanoski contributed 11 points and six rebounds and Gavin Almeida seven points. Austin Lupcke was especially vital in a nine-point, four-assist effort at the point.

“Austin Lupcke was a floor general all night,” Pinconning coach Casey Pashak said. “He handled Meridian’s full-court pressure perfectly and set up his teammates all night.”

Meridian, which went 52-4 while winning the past four JPC titles, was led by Cam Metzger with 20 points.

But Western coach Brian Merritt walked off the court with positive vibes from his team.

“The scoreboard doesn’t reflect how hard we played,” he said. “This may have been a loss, but it is a loss we can build on.”

HOCKEY: DAVISON 5, BAY CITY WOLVES 2

The Bay City Wolves scored the first two goals of the game but couldn’t add another, falling to Davison 5-2 in Saginaw Valley League hockey action.

“We let up for five minutes, had a couple bad line changes and suddenly it’s 3-2 and we couldn’t recover,” Wolves coach Zach Schalk said. “Credit to Davison for taking advantage.”

After a scoreless opening period, the Wolves got goals from Ethan Borowski and Caleb Anthony for a 2-0 lead. But Davison took a one-goal lead going into the third and never let up.

GIRLS BKB: HALE 28, AU GRES 26

In a defensive tussle where every shot counts, Hale had just enough to get past Au Gres 28-26 in North Star League action.

Dalaney Kimmerer scored eight of her nine points in the first half to spark Hale. Claudia Cadwell also tallied nine points while Abby Parkinson counted six points and 10 rebounds.

“We had a tough time getting our shots to drop,” Hale coach Ryan Parkinson said. “Au Gres-Sims did a nice job of making it tough on us all night and kept it close to the end.”

Au Gres got six points apiece from Kennadi Zeien and Emily Freehling, who also pulled down 13 rebounds. The Wolverines had a shot to tie the game but came up short.

“These are heartbreaking games to lose, but I’m proud of our effort and the work every girl put into this game,” Au Gres coach Lindsay Nelson said.

It was a good week for Gladwin.

The Flying G’s, who won five games all of last season, won its third game in the span of five days with a 76-34 victory over Harrison in a Jack Pine Conference clash.

After scoring just eight first-quarter points, Gladwin (3-1) broke loose for a 28-13 run in the second quarter to take charge.

“I guess we decided to start playing in the second quarter because we went off for 28, largely due to great inside out play,” Gladwin coach Mike Verellen said. “Our posts (Ethan Shea and Derek Sackitt) started to get good position and good looks.”

That opened things for Wilson Bragg, who sank five 3-pointers en route to a 24-point performance. Shea tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds while Sackitt also double-doubled with 11 points and 10 boards.

Ethan VanAntwerp and Lucas Gillespie each scored eight to lead Harrison.

Mac Schultz scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the first half to set the tone. Joel Ewald scored 17 points, Jamie Sizemore 15 and Logan Roth 10 in the win.
