Karima Walker: Waking the Dreaming Body — an ambient dream diary - Financial Times

solokol.blogspot.com

Based in Tucson, Arizona, Karima Walker operates in two different musical traditions. On one side are the gentle vocals and unadorned guitar of the singer-songwriter. On the other are the electronic drones and tape loops of the experimental musician. They combine to intriguing effect on Waking the Dreaming Body.

The album is a kind of dream diary in which the boundaries between individual and landscape, inside and outside, become blurred. It has a highly solitary feel. Walker, when she sings, occupies herself with the sort of regimen that has become all too familiar during the various lockdowns. “Every day is filled with endings,” she softly croons in “Reconstellated”. The album’s title track turns the observation the other way around. “Seems every day starts the same way,” she sings.

A sense of being strung out between waking and sleeping gives the music a horizontal character. Incident is rationed. Homespun contours of guitar and vocals open up into an immense plane of ambient drones. “Horizon, Harbor Resonance” is a 13-minute abstract instrumental with disorienting muttering noises and nature sounds. It is followed by the album’s title track, which taps the wellspring of 1960s folk.

There are long periods of the album when Walker’s voice goes unheard, which has the effect of making us wonder when she will sing again. The coming and going of her voice alters the acoustic field, just as a landscape painting changes when a portrait of a person is added to it. In keeping with the album’s interest in the subconscious, the effect chimes with an aspect of her personal life. Walker’s mother, from whom she spent much of her childhood separated, is a professional singer.
