As long as Trevor Story is set to be a free agent following the 2021 season, the New York Yankees will be linked to the Colorado Rockies shortstop.
Of course, Story is well aware of the Rockies’ financial failings. Remember, Colorado traded third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals one year after signing him to a $260 million contract extension. So Story probably isn’t so eager to re-up with Colorado. That means the Rockies could be forced to trade Story before the non-waiver deadline in July.
At first glance, the Yankees don’t seem like a good fit. After all, general manager Brian Cashman already has two massive contracts on his payroll, thanks to Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton. Plus right fielder Aaron Judge will be a free agent in two years and figures to land a hefty nine-figure contract.
On top of that, the Yankees already have Gleyber Torres at shortstop, and can’t slide him back to second base, since the Yankees just gave DJ LeMahieu a six-year, $90 million deal.

However there is one way around that: trade Torres for Story, straight up. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden was asked by a reader if a deal like that makes sense. His response was short and sweet:
No for the Yankees. Yes for the Rockies. Story is a free agent after the 2021 season. Torres is a free agent after the 2024 season. Story is the better player, but control matters in trade talks.
The 28-year-old Story is a two-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. The 24-year-old Torres also is a two-time All-Star. But Torres is under team control for the next four seasons, making him a more cost-effective solution for the Yankees at shortstop.
