Hi, I’m digital design writer Zoë Sessums. Follow along each week as I try my hand at a DIY project in and around my house. I’ll cover the inspiration, expert advice, and step-by-step plans of everything from challenging builds to simple renovations. This month’s undertaking: an accent wall!
When I moved into my house, a giant entertainment center of sorts was installed on the living room wall. Picture a big, bulky, blue-gray painted plywood structure with space for a large television and smaller cubbies for odds and ends. It was useful, but it didn’t have the look or necessity of anything I wanted in my new home. Since it was placed on the largest wall in the house, the homemade piece drew a lot of attention. Too much attention.
Much to the chagrin of my partner and I, that thing was nailed and screwed and glued to the wall, and it did not want to budge. I’ll spare you the details of the tedious paint stripping and chiseling that went on to get the piece down, but suffice to say, it was a relief once it was removed. However, once we had our bare, beautiful wall, we knew there were a lot of repairs in order (filling holes, smoothing dents, and painting) and the possibility to recreate a striking accent wall. It’s exciting to start off a project with such a blank canvas, so it felt like the sky (or tall ceiling) was the limit!
Dreamy finds
As usual, I like to see a wide range of projects in order to determine what I do and don’t want for my own space. I find it helpful to go the visual-overload route so I have have a lot of sources in mind to spark some creativity. I searched various colors, materials, and patterns to see what would resonate.
