Maryland Athletics aims to prepare student-athletes for success on and off the field. The latest athlete to join this prestigious group is former Terps football player, Brian Plummer (Class of 2019). Plummer, who graduated with a bachelors in communications, was able to gain a great deal of success through Maryland Made's InTERPship Academy and I.M.P.A.C.T. program.
The I.M.P.A.C.T. Program focuses on creating relationships between current student-athletes and industry professionals in order to promote their future success. Through this program, Plummer was able to meet former Terps football player and current CEO of Arena Technical Resources, Ralph Lary (Class of 1981).
"I initially met Ralph when he came to speak to the football team. We had these presentations called 'Real Life Wednesdays,' where every Wednesday the football team would bring in [non football] professionals," Plummer said. "It kind of struck a chord with me because what he did seemed very interesting."
Lary is a generous individual who likes to give back to the Maryland program in any way he can. He credits a lot of his success to his time as a student-athlete, as well as the opportunity to take part in an internship while playing football at the University of Maryland.
"I don't think I would have gotten my first job had I not done the internship. I've been involved with the M Club since I graduated. I always felt like I wanted to give back," Lary said. "I felt so lucky to have played football at Maryland."
Plummer would start as an intern at Arena Technical Resources in the summer of 2018. Then upon graduating in December 2019, after a successful summer internship, he joined the company as a full time technical recruiter.
"I knew that I wanted to be able to talk with people and help people, and this job allowed me to do both," said Plummer.
Plummer quickly became very successful and even earned a promotion to account manager. In 2020, Plummer also became the top performer in the entire company, crediting a lot of his success to the motivation and work ethic he gained from playing football.
"We had the best year we ever had in 2020, and Brian was one of the top recruiters in our entire company, in his first year," said Lary. "That is a great story, going from college grad to top performer in our entire company. He's just a great guy."
Plummer expressed a lot of gratitude for the I.M.P.A.C.T. program, explaining that all student athletes should take the opportunity to partake in this program given the chance. He described the experience as beneficial to both his athletic and professional opportunities.
"The InTERPship program also provided me an outlet where it got me off campus and allowed me to do something else for a little bit. It helped me get real life experience and it helped me see the world from a different lense," he said.
"I think of athletes as people who can easily be leaders, and any kind of profession needs that leadership quality. I think people should be taking advantage of this. We just have to get the word out. I think that's the biggest thing," Lary said. "Every time we've brought people in, we've been blown away."
Thanks to a successful stint with the I.M.P.A.C.T. mentoring program, Plummer looks forward to working with Lary and Arena Technical Resources for years to come.
