St. Mark's Hospital breaks ground on new 5-story patient tower - KJZZ

Construction on a massive tower at Mountain Star’s St. Mark's Hospital in Millcreek is finally underway after getting postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 5-story patient tower will have a major impact on the community.

Approximately $140 million is bringing both new and renovated space to the 150-year-old facility.

Hospital CEO Jeremy Bradshaw says 80% of the St. Mark’s admissions are for the emergency room. So, in addition to bigger patient rooms, waiting areas and workspace for staff will be expanded. The project also includes a new emergency room entrance.

Right now, Bradshaw says they have around 300 hospital beds now, but by the end of the project, they’ll have closer to 350, with even more renovations slated for already existing patient rooms.

"As part of this new tower, we're going to be expanding some of our services. For example, our orthopedic service line, and our cardiac service line will be expanded. With those expansions comes the need for more staffing and additional jobs,” said Bradshaw.

Parking will be impacted throughout construction. They're increasing valet services near entrances to help, as well as getting more volunteers to help patients navigate the hospital during construction.

The project duration is two years.

They expect to be done with the new patient tower in 2023.
