FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- A Fort Wayne mother is sharing her son's story through books.
April is Autism Awareness Month and by doing this, the mother told Fort Wayne's NBC News she wanted to make a difference in her sons life.
Karena Schroder has published two books so far about her son Miles who was diagnosed with Autism when he was three.
Miles is seven now and the books his mom writes about him tell their story.
"Autism Awareness Month is about getting the story out there,” Schroeder said. “It’s about what makes these kids cool, what makes them special so they're better understood so they can live a life like everybody else can."
When Miles was younger, Karena learned to communicate with him through song as a way to give him instructions. That's where the title of her first book "Singing in Color" came from.
"It was no problem at all, so I said it was like he saw the world in black and white and once you sang to him, it was like the world was in color and he could see it just like everybody else could,” she said.
When Miles began school, Karena wrote the book meant for teachers and therapists who helped the family through difficult times.
“I wanted a gift for them that was going to show them how important they were in our life and I wanted them to have something that was going to allow them to never forget Miles and their impact they had on us,” Schroeder said.
Then, her second book called "Loving in Laughter" was based on her two other children who love Miles for who he is.
“They see the world differently and different isn't bad,” she said. “Different isn't wrong, different is just different and I think we can learn a lot from different."
Different can bring some challenges. Those challenges vary among families, but Karena stays positive. She says Miles' uniqueness is worth it.
‘I'm hoping that I can just take what I do know and enhance the community's understanding even in a little way because a little knowledge is power,” she said. ‘A little knowledge will make that spark and will ignite that fire.”
Karena is working on her third book called "Covered in Kindness.” She was inspired by acts of kindness from Miles' friends and classmates.
Schroeder's books are for sale at various retailers including Amazon.
