Could Colorado Rockies All-Star shortstop Trevor Story be heading to the Oakland A’s before the trade deadline? One MLB.com columnist is saying the move could happen.
In a recent article, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand proclaimed that the Story-to-Oakland connection makes sense, as would a possible deal sending Story to the Milwaukee Brewers or New York Yankees. However, he ended the section about a Story trade saying that, if he was looking into his crystal ball at the trade deadline, “If I had to make a pick now, I’d go with Oakland.”
So why does a Colorado Rockies-Oakland A’s trade involving Trevor Story make sense?
Heading into Sunday’s action, Oakland led the National League West with a 28-19 mark. However, the A’s have gotten little production out of the shortstop position. Elvis Andrus has taken the bulk of time of shortstop for the A’s and entered Sunday with a .178/.223/.226 slash line.
So, yes, Story would be a natural upgrade at the position for the A’s. The question, however, becomes what would be the return for Story? Entering the season, Oakland’s farm system was ranked 26th out of the 30 Major League teams by MLB.com. The A’s also represented the only MLB team to not have a player in the top 100.
With the vitriol that followed the Nolan Arenado trade to the St. Louis Cardinals, Rockies fans are certainly hoping that, if Story is traded as is widely expected, the team will be able to see either highly rated prospects or those who are near ready to complete at the Major League level in return. While Oakland may be a potential destination for Story, would the Rockies get the return they need to rebuild their own farm system?
Of course, even though Jeff Bridich is no longer as the general manager in Colorado and Bill Schmidt has been elevated to the role on an interim level, what the Rockies will do at the trade deadline with Story, Jon Gray, Mychal Givens, and other players who could be dealt remains a mystery.
Should the Rockies decide to trade Story, Brendan Rodgers is a candidate to move into the position. Alan Trejo could also be an eventual fit at shortstop for the Rockies, but he is on the injured list with a dislocated finger suffered shortly after being sent to Triple-A as the Rockies prepped for Rodgers’ return from a hamstring injury.
