While we wait to hear an update on Colorado Rockies All-Star shortstop Trevor Story and the arm tightness that caused him to leave Thursday’s game early, let’s take a look back at the injuries that have plagued him since he debuted in 2016.
UPDATE: Colorado manager Bud Black said Story will not be in the lineup on Friday if the Pirates and Rockies play and likely wouldn’t be available for pinch-hitting duties. Black added that there was little to report in terms of Story’s status, but “tightness is still apparent in the forearm and around the elbow.
“It had lessened,” Black said of the tightness. “It’s still a little sore today.”
Black mentioned that Story would not be checked out by doctors in Pittsburgh, but would be examined by the Rockies medical staff once the team returns from its road trip, which ends on Sunday. The Rockies are off on Monday before starting a series in Denver against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
“I wish I could be more informative, but there really isn’t a lot to give,” Black said, adding that Brendan Rodgers and Garrett Hampson will likely fill in for Story at shortstop.
Trevor Story injury history
Here’s a look back at the injuries that have slowed down Story since he made an incredible impact in his first few days as a Major Leaguer back in 2016.
Trevor Story thumb surgery, 2016
Jamming his thumb after diving head first into second base, Story’s rookie season came to an unfortunate end on July 31 with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. The injury required surgery and ended Story’s first season with some impressive marks, including 27 home runs and 72 RBI (in 372 at-bats).
Despite the injury, Story finished fourth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting. Fellow NL West shortstop Corey Seager won the award … with 26 homers and 72 RBI (in 627 at-bats). Had Story not been injured, his numbers could have easily outdistanced the ones put up by Seager.
Trevor Story left shoulder strain, 2017
Story aggravated his shoulder on a swing in a May 9 game against the Chicago Cubs. He returned to the lineup on May 24.
Trevor Story elbow injury, 2018
While it didn’t force Story to the injured list, an elbow strain caused by a throw to first base (similar to the injury that happened this week in New York) forced Story from a game against the Dodgers on September 17. He wouldn’t appear in another game until September 24 as the Rockies and Dodgers battled the National League West title.
Eventually, the two teams would play in Game 163 in Los Angeles to decide the division title, with the Dodgers winning. Colorado went 3-3 without Story in the lineup during that September stretch.
Trevor Story thumb injury, 2019
Another headfirst slide, this time in Phoenix, caused another thumb injury for Story. This one, however, was not as severe as the one that required surgery in 2016.
Story injured the thumb on June 19 and returned to the Colorado lineup on July 2.
