Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins’ office released what it said is more evidence that racial hate motivated the now-deceased Winthrop rampage killer as the office warns of rising hate crimes against various groups of people.
In a press release titled “Nathan Allen In His Own Words,” the district attorney’s office released several bits of what it says are entries from Allen’s diaries. In fact, Rollins alleges Allen, who was white, wrote what he titled the “Allen Diaries,” which reads as an anti-Black manifesto, just two days before his rampage through Winthrop June 26 that left two dead.
“Racism is healthy and natural. And holding it in is bad for you,” the 28-year-old Allen wrote in said diaries, according to Rollins’ office. Other entries have Allen writing that Black people are “inferior” and white people “superior” and “apex predators.”
After further ruminating on how much he hated Black people, he wrote “I hope I can turn [Allen’s wife] to the truth or her to me.” He then said he doubted it, before ending the screed with, “When will it all pop off?”
Less than 48 hours later, he was dead after killing two Black passersby. Authorities have said he stole a semitrailer from the parking lot of a plumbing company in Revere before crashing into an SUV and then a building in Winthrop. He then got out of the truck and, wielding two pistols, gunned down retired state trooper David L. Green and Air Force Staff Sgt. Ramona Cooper before a Winthrop police sergeant shot him to death.
Rollins previously has said the intended target could have been a nearby synagogue, citing Allen’s “troubling white supremacist rhetoric” and antisemitic writings, too.
“These are disgusting, despicable comments that everyone has to get up and denounce,” Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty told reporters in a press conference Wednesday evening.
Rollins said Allen’s family has been extremely cooperative and said they had no idea about his radical ideology. “This man had fooled so many, outwardly appearing stable and upstanding while internally filled with extremist ideologies and hatred,” she said.
At the Wednesday press conference Delehanty called the officer who stopped Allen a “hero” and said that officer is doing well and likely will be back to active duty soon after being put on leave, as is normal following a fatal shooting.
Rollins said the same, praising both the Winthrop sergeant and the police officers who apprehended a man in Brighton who authorities say had just stabbed a rabbi multiple times last week.
The alleged stabber, Khalid Awad, is due in court on Thursday for a dangerousness hearing to determine whether he’ll remain behind bars as the court process plays out for what also is being investigated as an antisemitic hate crime.
