Christine Chiu, the star and producer of the Netflix series Bling Empire, is no stranger to Couture Fashion Week. Chiu has been traveling to Paris for years to take in fashion shows from some of the world's most admired designers—but this year's visit was just a little different. Not only was her schedule significantly diminished in the era of Covid-19 (she attended only five shows instead of the usual dozen or more), but she had the opportunity to bring her family—husband, Dr. Gabriel Chu, and their son, who's known as Baby G—along.

"This year was particularly special in so many ways," Chiu tells T&C. "The biggest is that it was symbolic for me and for people in general of life resuming. I was so proud to be part of that movement toward the resumption of life as normal, and for that to be led by fashion; it showed the resiliency of people and the optimism that comes with the clothes and their drawing in of a global audience. There’s such a sense of gratitude and optimism for something bright, new, and fresh that’s on its way."

And as for taking the trip en famille? Chiu says it added to the experience exponentially. "Early on, my husband and I would go [to Couture] together, but along the way he started skipping shows; we were doing 14 or 15 shows in a three-day span and for him, it wasn’t as much fun as it was for me, so I started attending alone" she says. "This year, we got to come back as a family. Because of the reduced schedule, I was able to take in Paris as its meant to be taken in; we weren’t rushing from place to place but really absorbing the city. In between shows we went to parks and gardens; we went to the Louvre and the aquarium. Experiencing Paris in that way was priceless."

Here, Chiu shares a photo diary of her trip to Paris—highlighting the best moments with fashion and with family.

1

"I love seeing Paris by foot, by bike, or by boat. Traveling on the Seine you get to see almost everything from a different perspective. It was great to bring Baby G on this ride; we were pointing out La Ratatouille, the Eiffel Tower, and Notre-Dame. For me this was particularly sentimental because the last time I was on this specific boat was with my mother, who has since passed away. She and I had the most amazing afternoon, drinking Champagne and waving at strangers, and taking in Paris by boat. It was wonderful to relive those memories with my husband and child."

2

"I love formal invitations; they’re a thing of the past and something that I cherish. I love the stationery and calligraphy, and I look at the paper weight and embossing; none of those little details go unnoticed by me, I’m very old-fashioned in that way and love formal gestures. In fact, I keep all of the stationery from every show every season. I have boxes and boxes with every ribbon and tag. It’s a glamorous way of scrap booking, and it’s a little sliver of my love affair with fashion."

3

"This is the Hôtel Plaza Athénée, I’ve been staying there during Couture Week as long as I can remember. This is the Haute Couture Suite, which has the best view. The Eiffel Tower is much closer in person than it appears in the photo! To be able to go to sleep every night and wake up every morning with this view is just priceless."

4

"It’s always been a tradition of mine to celebrate the Fourth of July in Paris, since it's usually the first day of Couture week. I usually have an 'Americans in Paris' dinner at Ralph’s, where I gather all of my American friends together. This year, I was able to bring my family there to celebrate."

5

"Every morning, we'd go to the restaurant at the Plaza Athénée, where I notoriously and embarrassingly show up in my sweats with wet hair. I’m obsessed with their soft-scrambled eggs, and we got to enjoy this breakfast every morning with Baby G who ate almost everything on the table! Nothing beats a super formal breakfast service—even for an American family in sweats."

6

"I don’t think there’s a more glamorous, elegant man than Mr. Armani. He never ceases to amaze me with how he can continuously reinterpret elegance. This is one of the more risqué looks I’ve worn by Mr. Armani, but I can’t think of another time I’ve felt more confident or elegant—and it was also comfortable! Comfort can be very underrated.

7

"Ashley Park told me it was her first Couture Week. Armani’s not a bad way to start that adventure!"

8

"When you're in Paris, the parties are a quarter of the fun! There are always lunches, get togethers, dinners, and parties. This was Balenciaga’s dinner gala, where the meal was vegan and delicious. Bryan Ferry performed at the after party; my husband was so excited that he was jumping for joy. It was the first time we’d been to a concert in a really long time, so he deserved to be dancing like a maniac."

9

"Over the years, I’ve taken some glam chances, but Couture Week just isn’t the place to test out new things. The stakes are high because you not only want to look your best, but if you’re feeling off, it tampers with your experience. Over the years I’ve learned it's easier to bring your own glam to avoid uncertainty and heartache. For the most part my team already knows the looks in advance so they can whip them out out quickly. This team had it easy, since they only have five looks to do—in a normal season, we have closer to 20 looks in a week. Next year, they’d better be ready."

10

"This was during a Balenciaga fitting. The last day that I’m in Paris, I try to do all of my fittings, and this year I was able to work in five prior to my flight out of town. This is one of the looks I’m interested in purchasing, and the hat was incredibly heavy—in a video you can see me wobbling a bit in it, but it’s so iconic that I must have it."
