ESPN’s Buster Olney reports “The Yankees are among the teams that have checked in on Trevor Story. Presumably, if they followed through, they’d move Gleyber Torres back to second base.”

At this point, the Colorado Rockies seem intent on trading Story, the two-time All-Star shortstop who will be a free agent after the season.
Earlier this week, the Denver Post reported “Two sources said Tuesday that six to eight teams have ‘engaged’ the Rockies about a trade for the two-time all-star shortstop, but declined to reveal which teams those are. Interim general manager Bill Schmidt said that number is ‘a little high.’”
Story, a two-time Silver Slugger Award recipient, is hitting .243 this season with 11 home runs, and represented the Rockies in the Home Run Derby at the 2021 MLB All-Star Game at Coors Field. Story defeated Texas Rangers slugger Joey Gallo in the first round, 20-19, before falling to Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini in the semifinals, 13-12.
While Olney floated the idea of the 28-year-old Story allowing the Yankees to reconfigure their infield, one club is considering an outside-the-box idea for Story. MLB.com reports that “According to sources, at least one team has reached out to the Rockies about (Trevor) Story with the idea of playing him in center field.”
There’s no way to know at this point if that team was the Yankees, but general manager Brian Cashman is shopping for help in the outfield ahead of the July 30 trade deadline.
