The Yankees have made a trade offer to the Rockies for shortstop Trevor Story, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports.
“No evidence of traction there,” Heyman said in a tweet. “Rockies haven’t definitively decided to trade him, though it would seem there’s a good chance they do.”
Heyman added that the Brewers have also “checked in” on Story.
The Yankees would work as a fit for the 28-year-old soon-to-be free agent Story.

If they acquired the two-time All-Star, they would shift Gleyber Torres back to second base and move DJ LeMahieu to first base. Story is considered one of the game’s best defenders at shortstop. They could also utilize story in center field, where they also have a need.
As of Monday morning, Story was hitting .242 with 12 homers, 46 RBI and 17 steals to go along with a .737 OPS in 85 games in Colorado.
It’s unclear what the Rockies would want in exchange for Story, the face of their franchise with Nolan Arenado now playing with the Cardinals.
And it’s also unclear if the Yankees would see Story as a stopgap or if they would try to sign him longterm.
On Saturday, LeMahieu told NJ Advance Media that he considers Story one of his best friends. The pair played together for three seasons with the Rockies.
“He can hit any fastball,” LeMahieu said. “He’s a really good fastball hitter. He does the little things, too. He’ll move a guy. He’s a team guy. Physically, he’s just extremely talented. He’ll take anyone’s heater away from them.
“He makes all the routine plays and he’s got the ability to make some very athletic plays. He turns hits into outs. To me, his defensive game has really grown over the years. He’s gotten way better. Not that he was bad, but he’s more consistent, which you should be at shortstop.”
