Will he stay or will he go?
That’s what everyone in MLB wants to know about Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story.
The two-time All-Star, who thrilled the locals Monday in the Home Run Derby at Coors Field, is scheduled to become a free agent after the season. Most have assumed it’s a foregone conclusion the Rockies will trade Story before the July 30 non-waiver deadline, rather than watch him walk after the World Series without receiving anything more than a compensatory draft pick. But according to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman, the Rockies aren’t committed to trading Story.
“We don’t have to trade him,” Bill Schmidt, Colorado’s VP of scouting said. “It is not a situation where we have to move money or my owner is telling me I have to trade [Story]. It really comes down to if we feel the offer is in the best interest of the Colorado Rockies. We will listen to what people have to say, but we are not just giving this player away. ... It is hard to say what different clubs are thinking. I have no idea what the approach will be. It is like putting your house up for sale. You anticipate getting the value, but you don’t know until people start making offers.”

As for Story, he’s just blocking out all the noise. “I am trying to stay in the present and not think about what could happen,” Story said.
Story, a two-time Silver Slugger Award recipient, is hitting .249 this season with 11 home runs. The 28-year-old upset Texas Rangers slugger Joey Gallo (another possible trade target) in the first round of Monday’s Home Run Derby, winning 20-19. But Story lost to Baltimore Orioles outfielder/first baseman Trey Mancini in the semifinals, 13-12. Mancini went on to lose in the finals to New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who defended his title from 2019, winning 23-22.
