There’s no doubt in my mind Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story have spoken about Trev coming to St. Louis as a free agent. The Cardinals have a need at shortstop. It will come down to price, because the team has other holes to fill.

Kiz: Not to be a shameless name-dropper, but as my friend Tom Green (the handsome dude on 9News) recently suggested, the Cardinals might have an extra $50 million stuffed under the mattress to lure Story to St. Louis. Hmm, wonder where the Cards mysteriously came up with that $50 milllion …
I would feel more comfortable about the Avalanche goaltending if we still had Philipp Grubauer.
Daniel, defensive-minded
Kiz: The staff here at Kickin’ It Headquarters might feel more comfortable if the Avs did less talking about winning championships until after they learned how to win more than one playoff series.
Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. is a self-centered, soft player that doesn’t want the COVID-19 vaccine. I am 93 years old with two doses of the vaccine, and plan to get the booster shot. I do it for myself, my family and all of society.
Big Jer, good neighbor
Kiz: Well, some young players who take great pleasure in shooting have yet to learn the joy of assisting teammates. Thanks for being a generous teammate, Big Jer.
Where did you get your doctorate, Kiz? MPJ has had the China flu twice, Einstein. He doesn’t need a shot. Who gives you the right to play God … or the right to be a communist czar? This is America. Nobody has the right to tell somebody what to put in their body. If I have the right to decide what goes in your body, perhaps I should shove my hockey stick …
S.P., freedom fighter
Kiz: So I gather you like hockey? Might I suggest you spend less time watching Tucker Carlson on television and more time watching Nathan MacKinnon? Oh, that’s right. You probably can’t watch the Avs on your TV. Sorry for bringing up another sore topic.
Maybe grow a brain, Kiz.
John, Denver
Kiz: After decades when the gray sand in my head bore no fruit, I’ve discovered it’s possible to grow hair inside my ears. So maybe there’s hope for me, after all.
And today’s parting shot is praise humbly accepted by one of the worst students in the history of the University of Missouri’s journalism program.
As a recently retired professor who has had to read more scholarly works and student essays than I can count, I wanted to call attention to the extraordinary writing of Mark Kiszla. Most people spend their time commenting on his strong but always well-founded opinions. I wanted to remind everyone of what a great writer he is. A good example of Mark’s entertaining prose: “The Broncos are 3-0*.” He then explained the reasons for the asterisk, as well as hoping linebacker Von Miller kicks Lamar Jackson’s “asterisk” — all in the first few sentences of his column. This is just one of many examples of Mr. Kiszla’s craft, for which, among other things, he should be celebrated.
