The Netflix documentary details the New York restaurateur’s rise and fall.

The bizarre story of Sarma Melngailis, who ran the vegan and raw food restaurant Pure Food and Wine, has been made into a four-part documentary for Netflix. It chronicles the rise of her New York restaurant, a 2000s celebrity hangout that she opened with the chef Matthew Kenney; her allegations that her husband, Anthony Strangis, manipulated her; and her path to believing in immortality and pleading guilty to theft and fraud charges in 2017. Chris Smith, who was the executive producer of “Tiger King,” directed, and the documentary will be on Netflix starting Wednesday.

“Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives,” Netflix, March 16.
